Some Old English Songs

Do you still remember which is the first English song you listened to? I don’t but I remember which song that triggers my love for listening to nice songs haha. OK, it’s this song “Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree” that my Primary School teacher taught us during Music lesson. She brought along a portable record player (like this one shown below) and played that song;

Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree by Tony Orlando and Dawn in 1973.

Yes that was in the 70s during my Primary school music lessons. Of course you will not forget his “Oh my darling knock 3 times” as you always heard it on radio then.

Knock Three Times by Tony and Dawn

Here are some of my favourites songs of the 60s;

Puppy Love by Paul Anka in 1960;

He wrote this song “Puppy Love” for Donny Osmond (if you remember the Osmond family).

Puppy Love by Donny Osmond

Talking about Paul Anka, a singer as well as song writer, was popular in the late 50s and 60s. Here are some of his songs that I loved to listen to;

– 1957 Diana by Paul Anka

– 1959 Put Your Head On My Shoulder by Paul Anka

– 1969 My Way by Paul Anka

– 1974 Having My Baby by Paul Anka Duet with Odia Coates

– 1974 I Don’t Like To Sleep Alone by Paul Anka Duet with Odia Coates

– 1974 She’s A Lady by Paul Anka. This song he wrote for Tom Jones.

– 1971 She’s A Lady by Tom Jones (Tom Jones version)

– 1975 Times Of Your Life by Paul Anka (This is the popular Kodak Ad Song, remember? maybe also Chun See favourite song too)

Tom Jones is another sexy male singer of the mid 60s. One of his popular song was “She’s A Lady” mentioned earlier.

In 1969, he was;

and now;

Some of his songs that I love;

Green Green Grass Of Home by Tom Jones

Delilah by Tom Jones

It’s Not Unusual by Tom Jones

So how popular is this song “It’s Not Unsual”? Just quote ” I dare anyone over forty to listen to Tom Jones’ “Its Not Unusual” without singing along to the chorus and attempting a brief Jones like hip swivel.

Not forgetting the King of Rock & Roll – Elvis Presley!

Love Me Tender 1956

Jailhouse Rock 1957

Are You Lonesome Tonight 1960

Can’t Help Falling In Love 1962

In the 70s my godparents got this type of radio cassette recorders where I used it to listen to radio and try to tape down the songs that I liked.

Here is a photo of those old radio cassette recorder;

And the typical TDK blank cassette tapes that I used;

Luckily in the past, radio had less talk and commercial and they played more songs. Here is another song about racing that I loved best.
Tell Laura I Love Her by Ray Peterson in the 60s.

Another of his top hit;

Corina Corina by Ray Peterson.

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow by Shirelles in 1960. Of course there were many version for those songs in other languages.

I Can’t Stop Loving You by Ray Charles . Though he was gone, but this was a top hit too in 1961.

When I talked about Ray Charles, I tend to think about Stevie Wonder too. Another great singer!

Part Time Lover by Stevie Wonder

I Just Called To Say I Love You by Stevie Wonder

My Cherie Amour by Stevie Wonder. Those head shaking action of his seems to become his icon.

Blowing In The Wind by Stevie Wonder. You must watch this one and listen to what he said before singing.

The original version;

Blowing In The Wind by Bob Dylan in 1963.

Another version by Bee Gees too;

Blowing In The Wind by Bee Gees
In 1962 the year I was born, one of the best song was by Neil Sedaka. Another famous singer of the 60s.

Breaking Up Is Hard To Do by Neil Sedaka in 1962;

Same song when he was older.

Laughter In The Rain by Neil Sedaka.

Solitaire by Neil Sedaka. Another great song! I love to see him playing the piano as he is a good entertainer.
Remember I told you I loved to record those songs broadcasted on the radio during my Primary School days on the blank audio tapes. Some of the songs I recorded were;

Take Me Home Country Road by John Denver in 1971.

Photo Credit : http://www.john-denver.org

A popular country song singer and song writer. Almost everyone who played the guitar then will play this song. In fact, I love quite a lot of his songs;

Leaving On A Jet Plane by John Denver in 1969.

Follow Me by John Denver in 1970. Because of him, I then came to know that guitar can have 12 strings and not just 6 strings hehe.

Sunshine by John Denver in 1971.

Rocky Mountain High by John Denver in 1972.

Annie’s Song by John Denver in 1974.

Perhaps Love by John Denver in1982.

Perhaps Love by John Denver and Lene Siel. This is a beautiful duet version you shouldn’t miss.

When I looked at John Denver’s hair, of course that will lead me to recall Olivia Newton John. A beautiful singer who fell victim to breast cancer. Maybe you remember her better through that movie Grease with John Travolta.

Photo Credit : http://www.olivia-newtonjohn.com

If You Love Me (Let Me Know) by ONJ in 1974.

Have You Never Been Mellow by ONJ in 1975.

Please Mr Please by ONJ in 1975.

You Are The One That I Want by ONJ with John Travolta in 1978. This song from the popular movie Grease then. Movies like this one and Saturday Night Fever were very popular with youngster then. Of course we were all trying to dance like them like the fingers pointing slanting up.

Summer Nights by ONJ with John T. also from the movie Grease.

Hopelessly Devoted To You by ONJ in 1978.

Magic by ONJ in 1980.

Xanadu by ONJ in 1980.

Suddenly by ONJ and Cliff Richard in 1980.

Physical by ONJ in 1981. This video will help you to recall the TV entertainment show Solid Gold. Solid Gold was a TV programme to countdown the weekly top ten with their Solid Gold Dancers. A popular TV show from 70s to 80s.

Heart Attack by ONJ in 1982.

Another popular lady singer during my Primary School time was Anne Murray. Her are some of her songs that I love best;

Snowbird by Anne Murray in 1969.

Danny’s Song by Anne Murray in 1973.

Killing Me Softly With His Song by Anne Murray in 1973. My favourite at that time.

You Needed Me by Anne Murray in 1978.

In the late 70s, my parents bought a HiFi set comprised of cassette deck, record player, radio, amplifier and a pair of speakers. That was the time where I started buying albums and more blank tapes to record my favourite songs. Here you can see of of my favourite singer Lobo;

See that big headphone on the floor. That was the trend I think at that time haha. Another trend, or rather fashion trend then was the “bell bottom” jeans or pants I wore. It was the fashion at that time hehe!

Some of my favourite songs from Lobo are;

How Can I Tell Her by Lobo

Me And A Dog Named Boo by Lobo

I Love You To Want Me by Lobo

There were simply too many too many nice songs and good singers in the past. It will be never ending if I attempt to list them all here (though after trying for a week, I gave up hehe). Before I end, I don’t think I should before listing Beatles.

Hey Jude by Beatles

Yesterday by Beatles

Beatles had inspired other pop groups to form in other countries like the Bee Gees. In 1966, the Bee Gees. Barry, Robin, and Maurice worked together as a group to create and record their own songs. Though they were already singing as Gibbs brothers way before that, but most of us came to know about them maybe through the movie Saturday Night Fever.

The Gibbs Songs – if you wish to know more about this 3 brothers.

Words by Bee Gees

I Started A Joke by Bee Gees

Same song but in the past. Let’s compare.

Last but not least this song for you;

Holiday by Bee Gees.

    “Beautiful Sunday” was one song I cnanot forget. Why? It was a standard song from my BMT days at 3SIR Bedok Camp in 1973. One Hokkien Pang sang the Chinese version – an indication how popular this song was in Singapore at that time.

    Someone sang this song on a Sunday when we kenna go “Range” at Nee Soon Camp. That made us feel so miserable bcos kenna confined. That guy got punched.

  2. 2 Victor Koo Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at 11:07 am

    Two songs from the 1970s and 1980s which I cannot forget were Morris Albert’s “Feelings” and Stevie Wonder’s “I’d just called to say I love you”.

    The reason? So called friends made fun of me using the lyrics of those two songs:

    When I yawned, my friend saw my teeth and instantly burst out singing, “Fillings, nothing more than fillings.”

    On another occasion, I had to work on New Year’s Day, another so called friend sang, “No New Year’s Day to celebrate…”

  3. 3 laokokok Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at 12:04 pm

    Hi Victor, Stevie Wonder’s I’d just called to say I love you reminds me of his head shaking stunt haha.

  4. 4 daddyto3 Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at 9:18 am

    This is a GREAT post! Brought back many nice memories. Some of these songs were also my parents’ favourite. I remember them singing and trying to put me to bed. I love the picture of the cassette tape… reminds me of my pride & joy (the Sony Walkman!).

    Thanks for reliving these beautiful memories for me. By the way, do you know the title of the song that went like this?

    “Oh-woo-oh-woo-yeh-yee-yeh-yee… I love you more than I could say… I love you twice as much tomorrow… Oh-oh… Love you more than I could say…”

  6. 6 Lam Chun See Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at 11:22 am

    How about Simon and Garfunkel? They are my favourites.

    During my varsity days in the early 70’s, Lobo was very popular. Stoney was the favourite of many, including me. But I like: “You Sure Took a Long Time”.

    Neil Sedaka: My favourite is This Will Be Our Last Song Together.

    John Denver’s Perhaps Love: I thot he did the duet with Placido Domingo?

    Nowadays even my kids like to listen to Bread.

  7. 7 laokokok Thursday, July 26, 2007 at 8:22 am

    Yes Chun See, Simon and Art Garfunkel are great too. Bread is also my favourite.

  8. 8 shaun Thursday, July 26, 2007 at 9:32 am

    Your blog has been the inspiration to my setting up one of my own after months of dillydallying around. But oh gosh! I do remember all these songs so what does this make me – what’s the female gender for laokokok or is laokokok neutral?! Put me in such a melancholy mood. How about Englebert Humperdink (I think that’s how its spelt – he only goes by Englebert these days). ‘The Last Waltz’ is my all-time favourite. Anyone going to his concert?

    Anyone for Barry Manilow? I love his more recent release “The Greatest Songs of the Fifties”.

    I recently heard Ed Aimes “My Cup Runneth Over” – was not my favorite in my younger days but it just bowled me over this time – no lah, not growing old, just growing sentimental, sigh!

  16. 16 fiz Saturday, July 28, 2007 at 12:03 am

    haha thanks Shaun 🙂

  17. 17 laokokok Monday, July 30, 2007 at 8:00 am

    Hi Justcate,
    Welcome to this blog here. Engelbert and Barry are of course my favourites too.

    As for the female gender of Laokokok… maybe Lao Zhar Bo which have already being taken or LaoAhMmm.

  18. 18 justcate Monday, July 30, 2007 at 5:19 pm

    Thanks but they sound like old grandmothers – not ready for that yet! Always seems easier for guys to grow old. ‘Uncle’ doesn’t have same connotation as ‘Auntie’ and white hair on guys look – well, distinguished … so they say!

  19. 19 notsolao Sunday, August 12, 2007 at 3:16 pm

    I happen to “stumble” on to this blog and am amused at what I’ve read so far. I am in that era of long ago too and those songs that were mentioned in this blog we songs I grew up with.

  20. 20 Samantha Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at 4:12 pm

    My dad had a record player like the pic you posted. I remember it often skips when dirt accumulated on the record or on the pin and we had to use some toner or something to clean it 🙂 Some of the vinyl records we had included Hank Williams and Elvis and Paul Anka. And when I was young (and the record player was new), dad would not allow us to play it. So I would play it when he’s at work haha! It really takes a steady hand to get it on the particular track that you want played. I’m so glad I “googled” Lobo today and hit on your blog! “How Can I tell Her” is just repeating itself on my MP3 player…Must ask my son to teach me to blog. Yes! That shall be my new year reso haha! (Next year lah!!)

  21. 21 laokokok Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at 8:40 am

    Hi Samantha,
    Welcome here and hope my blog will bring back some happy memories for you.

  24. 24 robert Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 10:03 am

    The first English pop song I heard was my dad’s “Look For A Star” from the movie “Circus of Horrors”. I believe it was recorded in 1960.

    My first “official” record that I bought was a 45-single called “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head” by B.J. Thomas. I remember buying this single (I still have it) from Max Record Shop at Tay Buan Guan Shopping Centre (2nd Floor).

  25. 25 laokokok Thursday, January 31, 2008 at 7:26 am

    Hi Robert,
    Welcome here. Glad to hear that more and more remember Tay Buan Guan.

  26. 26 robert Monday, February 4, 2008 at 11:52 am

    I remember it very well because that was the only ‘in’ place to be in the 70s.

    My mother used to drive us there via Joo Chait Road, into Fowlie Road and into Onan Road – to the TBG Carpark.

    There was a supermarket there, and Poh Heng Jewellers on the ground floor.

    2 exits to East Coast Road, one main one and a slightly narrower one – there was also a Boston Tailor there. I used to tailor my pants there.

    Such memories.

  27. 27 profkingsfield2004 Friday, February 8, 2008 at 8:43 pm

    “Speak Softly Love” was sung by Andy Williams. The song was the themse form the godfather.

    “Look for A Star” by Gary Miles was the song I heard over the radio when ever my father left Singapore at the Paya Lebar Airport in 1960. When my father died recently, this song came back from memory as if to remind me “to look at the star” to find our where he has left us. he used to tell me when I was a 6 yera old to look for the a star to find out the direction that his aeroplane would fly to a certain country.

  28. 28 Jess Friday, March 7, 2008 at 2:31 pm

    wow i never tot that i could actually stay on to post another comment.. for all these old songs.. i knew say perhaps 40% of them… Funny thing is that though im born in the 1970s.. i loved these songs.. not so much of the Oasis or NKOTB or even DM – Depeche Mode…
    Songs like Suddenly, Oceans Deeps, I juz call to say i love u are all but part of my favourites.

    My all time greatest hits in my peronsal album… Bee Gees.

  30. 30 laokokok Monday, April 28, 2008 at 7:22 am

    Yes Gary, Bee Gees my favourite too!

  31. 31 Hamzah Sunday, June 22, 2008 at 12:24 am

    The first “oldie” that I heard when I was in primary one was “Love Letters in The Sand” by Pat Boone. Then later a song “Oh Carol” by Neil Sedaka. Very old, right?

  32. 32 peek-a-boo Sunday, June 22, 2008 at 5:52 am

    To robert :
    I used to follow my elder sister to Max Record Shop at TBG!I remember her buying a Carpenters album there.OMG I’m having another flood of memories here.There was also a magazine store just after the entrance to the 2nd floor.And on the ground floor there was a chic-ish coffee house I think it was called Wonderland just before the stairway.

    To Hamzah :
    No they’re not very old LOL!Just classics.Oldies but goodies.Not my period but I think they’re great songs.They were played in my home too.Rediffusion filled our home with all the up to date music.I always thought how amazing it was for a little brown box to play such great music.Sigh!

  33. 33 peek-a-boo Sunday, June 22, 2008 at 6:29 am

    To Thouria Budier :

    “Yesterday” hmmmm… perhaps you heard a Tom Jones version but the original is by The Beatles.

    The lyrics you mention – ‘when I need you I just close my eyes and I’m with you…’ are from a song called “When I Need You” by Leo Sayer.A beautiful and sentimental song.(Thank you Rediffusion!)

    Sudarshan I could be wrong but I think the singer’s called Tracy Huang. She was quite popular in Singapore especially in the late 70/80s.
    Try looking her up on You Tube. Link in and search for ‘Tracy Huang’. Hope you find what you’re looking for. Cheers!

    Reading the posts here is itself a joy. I love almost all the old pop songs of the 50s and the 60s. People then used to copy down lyrics of songs they liked in their exercise books like they were collecting stamps. I remember the first song I copied in my hardcover exercise book was Fraulein. Other songs that I copied down too like We Will Make Love by Russ Hamilton, Someday by Ricky Nelson, Do You Or Dont You Love Me, Follow That Dream by Elvis, Tom Dooley. I am beginning to think of an unending lists of many old songs that I love.

    There was one song that have frustrated me for over a very long time. I remember only part of the tune but not the lyric nor the title. I used to hear it played frequently over many evenings at Central Theatre at Jln Eunos where I stayed.

  43. 43 Lim LA Monday, June 1, 2009 at 7:40 am

    Saw this blog only today. Great list of songs here. Congratulations! Sweet memories. When I was young/I listened to the radio…

    This blog has given me immense pleasure. I love most of the songs of your like.

    Do you know the title of the song that went like this?
    ” just a little love and understanding ……”. I used to hear this song in radios during late sixties. Only from then on I started loving english songs.

    You have wonderful taste for old songs.

    Regards
    Alex

    Hi!
    Thank you very much for reliving my memories
    You have a great taste and knowledge about
    many songs.
    I heard a song,maybe in the early 90’s
    and I am unable to get it again.
    It is sung by a male and is a soft song
    (forever you…)
    I think I heard it in Love songs collection.
    I thought you would be able to help.

    Regards
    Sunita

  50. 51 laokokok Friday, October 30, 2009 at 7:36 am

  51. 52 Sunita Monday, November 2, 2009 at 8:46 pm

    Hi!
    Thanks for the reply.
    I was 100% sure that you would surely know
    about that song – sad that you are not aware of it.
    Maybe that song was sung much earlier and I heard it in 90’s
    Any sites from where we can download Eng.songs for free?

    Regards.

  52. 53 Roy Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 1:41 am

    Hi,
    I just found out your blog. Very good initiative indeed. I do appreciate your list of old songs. Add to those which are already mentioned by you & others,may I include the names of Cliff Richard (his 14 songs chosen as UK No 1,compared to 17 songs each by The Beatles and Elvis Presley), Neil Diamond (Sweet Caroline,Play me,Stones etc), Trini Lopez (some amazing country songs like If I had a hammer, Shame and scandal, Lemon Tree), Jim Reeves(Bimbo, Snowflake, Distant Drums). Of course, there are others.
    By the way, I am trying to locate in the net if I can dwonload 1971 hit of Daliah Lavi’s song “Jerusalem”. This is one of my personal best. Can you or anyone please help?

    Best Regards
    Roy

    Thanks, Very enjoyable post. It’s amazing that like so many folks, I can still remember the lyrics of these songs. I guess good songs
    never fade away.

    I recall that was an Asian singer Theresa Carpio who sang the cover version of “I Believe” which was very popular. I tried to look for it on youtube, but no success. LKK or anyone, any thoughts or idea?

    I am looking for the name of the song with these lyrics.
    You know how I tried my love
    and you know how I cried my love
    I did the very best my love
    but I could have loved you more.
    I met another yesterday,
    suddenly passed my way,
    I’m sorry for you now,
    but you know its all over
    you know how I tried my love
    and you know how I cried my love and
    I did the very best my love
    but I could have loved you more.
    Yes its hard to see me now,

    The Sound of Silence

  77. 78 Has Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 2:15 pm

    sounds familiar to pearl jam- last kiss with parts of d lyrics below;

    We were out on a date in my daddy’s car
    We hadn’t driven very far
    There in the road, up straight ahead
    A car was stalled, the engine was dead
    I couldn’t stop, so I swerved to the right
    I’ll never forget the sound that night
    The screamin’ tires, the bustin’ glass
    The painful scream that I heard last.

    When I woke up, the rain was pourin’ down
    There were people standing all around
    Something warm rollin’ through my eyes
    But somehow I found my baby that night
    I lifted her head, she looked at me and said
    “Hold me darling just a little while.”
    I held her close, I kissed her our last kiss
    I found the love that I knew I would miss
    But now she’s gone, even though I hold her tight
    I lost my love, my life that night.

This song was played on a jukebox back in the old days along a shophouse at Anson Road back in the late 1950s. Till this day, I still have a fond liking for this song. Hope all of your, too !

    Wedding Photographer Wedding Photographer

    My best husband to be we are somewhat in photos, the dog greater than all of us, but yet photos for your wedding may possibly be a main concern. We both contracted that we all wanted somebody can be efficient at receiving honest vaccinations, as well as all of us, I wanted somebody who carries a fine sight (web browser creative with regards to their manner of aiming). My best husband to be Tim, appeared uncovering IQphoto we was in fact truly content with regards to their use their web page.

    Down the track as soon as we decided to encounter Frederick with the facility, i was established try collections associated with weddings in which Alex (who exactly i was allotted to with a lot of our program i was pondering) strike nearby and also vacation destination weddings, we was just blown away. My partner and i discovered I wanted mike geary for you to spray a lot of our wedding around Sept. Guaranteed they are often relating to the high result in relation to pricing, but nonetheless very reasonably priced for the purpose you can get. I believe it’s completely significant being familiar with you’re getting good photographs for your special occasion.

    For ones longest occasion, Tim argued with if they should bring conventional wedding photographs. With a bit of genuine in my area, we made a decision to join to need Alex spray a lot of our wedding photographs as well, and also done in which in a lot of our without a doubt lined up wedding program (wedding spray is usually discount should you both the wedding and also wedding with each other) . We actually basically acquired a lot of our initially procedure a while back we acquired a lot wonderful. Nor persons a chance to satisfy Alex as soon as we had been with the facility since he was so pre-occupied, thus would have been a minimal involved it might be difficult, but yet son was in fact My partner and i unsuitable. Alex can be quite experienced, a breeze intending, a good notion or maybe cracks, and also efficient at generating conversing to create everyone look a reduced amount of difficult in front of the camera system. Guaranteed it had been rather difficult at the start regarding your husband to be we, nevertheless it really was just considering that we weren’t guaranteed what you can do. But yet to be the working day followed, it really bought holistic, and a lot more wonderful along the way.

    Alex managed to get everyone chat, have a good laugh and have themselves quite a bit, a classic experience for a fine digital photographer. Just what made feeling to me was in fact information on how polite it had been associated with the dog to deliver to split out 6hr shot procedure in 2 (3hrs each and every) upon discovering any time we were treated to positioned. Our usages would need 1 / 2 of the particular procedure around East Bay, along with the rest of it during the destination, every carried out a person daily occasion. But yet after the initially Three or more time associated with aiming around East Bay, Alex made available for people like us to accept rest of it with yet another day therefore aren’t required to put things off around website traffic (which often should/does be counted in the occasion anyone course). To me, that is particularly polite, considering that we have now more time to use photographs at unique regions around SF devoid of using a couple of hours pc basically getting out at this time there. Walking out to departing the particular wedding spray emotion just like Freezing a wonderful, and also peaceful working day with your husband to be and also a mate. That is information on how comfortable Alex made me look.

    Following spray, we asked for the several photographs spine as quickly as possible therefore may turn generating a lot of our save-the-date bank cards right now, as well as a lot of our shock, Masha e-mailed These individuals here we are at everyone in a week! I’d been particularly thrilled with these products from your wedding spray, but not to note these are particularly receptive by e-mail for you to your husband to be, in addition a different furthermore! Tim we not usually get fine pictures with each other considering that one of everyone is normally behind your camera, thus was so psyched to find out plenty of good photographs persons with each other. The actual photographs in which Alex required had been particularly all-natural, creative and definitely acquired some terrific candid’s, exactly what I’d been in search of.

    Following initially wedding spray to see one last programs, My business is anticipating the second wedding procedure with Alex, and also are psyched to acquire the dog spray a lot of our wedding around Sept. I may be able to write a particular update publish after the wedding!
