Beatty Integrated School was my Primary School and back then, it wasn’t called Beatty Primary School. To understand this, probably we need to go into a bit of history on the past educational system.
Beatty Integrated School was officially opened by Mr. Chan Chee Seng (a popular figure in Jalan Besar area at that period), the then Parliamentary Secretary to Ministry Of Home Affairs in 1963. During the year 1959 to 1968, all those schools built were integrated schools. The purpose is to achieve social cohesion via integrating 2 or more language streams in one school.
That was because before World War II, and under the British rule, they only focused on English and Malay schools. Chinese and Tamil schools were run privately. It was during the Japanese Occupation that the education system in Singapore was then changed.
The Japanese introduced daily flag raising ceremony followed by physical exercise. They also forced to have a common language Nippon-go. After the Japanese left, our education system started to change – a free universal primary education to meet the country’s need. So the meaning of Integrated means Chinese, Malay and Tamil was the mother tongue language for the English stream schools. Most of the Chinese schools then were privately run. Note : Those 2 buildings behind were Block 6 (2 storey flat) and Block 7 (4 storey flat where my godmother’s family stayed).
The school ground now has been used by SINDA and some childcare center. Sad to say that the Beatty Integrated School was a school of the past; but the Secondary School is still around.
Hi
I was a student from beatty primary sch. Left the sch in 1993. I still misses beatty very much. I don’t know why, maybe it’s because it is no longer there thats why people tend to miss it. I also misses the blk in front of the sch, my friends used to stay there.but we lost touch.

Hi Janet,
Ha another ex-schoolmate from Beatty Primary Sch! Those were the good old days.
If I’m not mistaken, they used to have evening classes at Beatty for working people who wanted to take exams as private candidates.
I’m not aware of that, maybe I have left that estate already.
Left schoon in 1987, miss those old days there.
I was the first few batches student there from Aug 1962 to 1963. We were at first Chin Nan Public School students. When it was closed down due to fund runing out, we ere transfer to Whampoa Secondary School to use their classrooms and the school was re-named to Whampoa Primary School in 1961. I think that was temparoary arrangement to wait for the Beatty Integrteted School to be built. I did not continued and compleate my PSLE there as I was staying in St Michael’s Estate. It was a little bit far as my brother ad I got to go by private school bus. Most of the Chin Nam or later Whampoa school students were either from St Michael’s Est, Raymen Estate or along Bendemeer Road. I know a Senior Police Officer who is now still serving is from Chin Nam, Whampoa and completed PSLE in Beatty.
Wow, this has brought back many fond memories of my 6 years btw 1976 and 1981 in Beatty Pri. The best moment would have been the recess time. We loved playing ‘police catch theives’, runining wild around the two tuckshops. The common sight daily would be the human chain formed by students that stretched across the hardcourt getting ready to break free and run away from the police.
I had also took part in one inter-school badminton tournament and we won a big trophy for the school…can’t remember the exact yr but the teacher in charge then was Mr. Chia. (some call him…’Lau Ye Cher’ ie. old fashion car in chinese.)
Hope to catch up with my old friends….especially my long lost friend Lim Ivy.
Regards,
Yuet Lai
I studied at Beatty Integrated Primary School from 1965 to 1970. My P6 form teacher was Mrs Bau Aik Neo (she taught us EL and Maths).
It brings me fond memories to think of those days. ‘Be Ready’ was our school motto.
We used to have our Sports Day at the field near Race Course Road (Next to Ceylon Sports Club). This because we do not have a school field.
Sometimes, I made a detour to pass by the school building when I drive along Serangoon Road.
Glad to have former Beatty pupils talking about the good old days!
I studied in Beatty Primary School from 1975 – 1980.
Still looking for my old classmates from Pri 6A in 1980….managed to find only other 4……love to gather and relive the old memories.
I’m from Beatty Integrated too. 1969 to 1972. p1 to p4 only. I shifted to Bedok in p5. I hope to meet up with my old class mate. https://www.facebook.com/groups/beattyintegrated/
