Tiew Lum

“Tiew Lum” in Cantonese means “Hanging Basket”.

My godmother’s house at Beatty Road was those of 4 storey high. As we were staying on the highest floor, my godmother had this round cane basket tied to a rope.

We used this round cane basket to buy those food like kaya bread, “ham chim pan”, “pak tong kow”, etc. from the food vendor riding on his bicycle. We would drop the basket down slowly with the rope tied to it and when the hawker put the food in it, he would collect the money placed in the basket. Then we would slowly pulled up the basket.

Of course now not many will be doing this act as most of us are staying higher than 4 storeys. Also now we have more and more “Dial and Deliver” service. Also illegal hawking are no longer allowed in Singapore.
